Triple Triad is Final Fantasy VIII's card game. This is a mini-game that you can play throughout the game. You can collect special cards based on the minor enemies, Bosses, Guardian Forces and the major characters from Final Fantasy VIII. With your deck you can challenge almost anyone to a game of cards. With the Card Mod ability(learned from the GF Quezacotl), you can refine the cards you've won into items. You can also turn enemies into cards with the Card ability. Keep in mind the enemies must be someone close to death, and you do not gain any EXP from the monster, but you do get AP for your GFs.
To play you need to have a good starting deck. You can get one from a student in Balamb Garden right as you're leaving the 2nd Floor classroom. The cards aren't great but they're better than nothing!
• Challenging people to a card game is really quite easy. Approach a person in a normal fashion, and press the SQUARE button. If the person is a card player, they'll more than likely accept your challenge. Otherwise they'll just talk with you like normal.
• If you've been given an assignment it's best to wait and play cards on your own free time, apparently the Garden looks down on SeeDs who goof off while on assignments. There is no such thing as too many of one card. If nothing else use that Card Mod ability to turn your extras into items you can sell for Gil.
The biggest challenge Triple Triad presents is the always changing set of rules. So, while it may seem like a good idea to always play your best hand, many times that is not the case!
• When the rules are basic (e.g. Same, Open, Sudden Death and Elemental), all you need are strong cards to win. You can pretty much overpower your opponent by playing the cards that he/she simply cannot beat. However, if some of the more advanced rules (e.g Plus, Same Wall and Random) are in effect, it's best to back off a bit and try to win the game through strategy rather than brute force.
• Always play defensively. There's no reason to take each card your opponent plays. Play a waiting game with your opponent and plan ahead. Let your opponent trap his/her own cards, and then force certain moves by strategically placing your cards on the board.
• Corner's are typically the most defensive place on the board. And the center place is obviously the worst. In some cases though, you may find it beneficial to play a card in the center to start the match and limit your opponents options. This works well against tougher opponents.
• Try not to spread the Random rule! It's a killer! And although Open may seem like the best rule in the game, your opponent gains as much from it as you do. Skilled opponents may gain too much from being able to see your hand so be CAREFUL!
There are some side quests that involve Triple Triad. Hopefully I'll be getting some up soon! ~Dj
