Coverage » Xenosaga » Great Joe

There is a person, called Great Joe, and if you find him and defeat him, Jr. will acquire his last two Ether spells, and his last Tech Attack.

Finding Him
You'll find Great Joe within the Durandal. But you will only find him if Jr. is the on screen character.

Take the train to the Residential Area of the Durandal. Take your group into the room farthest to the fore and starboard(huh???) Yeah that's what the guide book says, just go to the right and back. You'll know if you're in the right room because the carpet should be green and a silver monolith(like the EVS and Save Points) in the first section of the room. Once you're in the right room move into the bedroom area where the closets are. Have Jr. shoot out the doorway of the right-hand closet. And Great Joe should be there.

What Now?
Okay so now that you've found Great Joe, he'll ask Jr. for a challenge, seeing as they are both gunfighters(Maybe it's just a western thing xD). Press Accept and the battle will begin, but unless you've prepared I'd cancel and then accept when you're prepared.

Be Careful!
Just to let you know, Great Joe is a VERY tough opponent, so don't take him lightly. You can try to defeat him at any time in the game(so long as you can use Jr. and can get on the Durandal). But you may want to level up quite a bit before you try to fight him. Also note that you CANNOT use your A.G.W.S. in this battle, so it's just your characters and their skills.

Preparing for Battle
Party Members:
Consider having either Shion of Momo in the group, to act as healers, and of course Jr. has to be in the party, and either KOS-MOS or chaos(basically choose whoever you think is the strongest of the two).
Party Placement:
Have either Momo or Shion in the back row, behind Jr. so he can use Dandyism(if you've learned it). And everyone else in the first row.

Have as many characters as possible protecting against Curse, as that is one status effect Great Joe can use on you(not often does he though).

Begin the Fight
Hp: 9999 | Weak Vs.: Nothing | Item: Swimsuit | Exp:18000 | G: 200 | T.Pts: 200 | E.Pts: 180 | S.Pts: 200

Joe's normal attack is very nasty and involves a charged spur dropping from above. This is a physical attack, so it won't effect anyone in the back row. But he has high strength, so he can do some serious damage to your characters in the front row. This is where having Momo or Shion in the back row comes in handy.

His second common attack is Gambler. Joes uses this Ether attack at a distance, but it doesn't do much damage, and shouldn't hurt your back row healer much.

The Heart Shot Punch is a seldom used status attack of Joe's. It deals damage to one character, and also can inflict Curse at the same time.

Soul Crusher is another Ether Attack. This one is more dangerous then Gambler, as it is a large-range blast that damages everyone in your party at once. The damage isn't usually too bad on it's own..... unless it's been charged.

At some point in the battle, Joe may charge his energy before his attack, You first see a notes "Planning Combination Attack," and on his next turn he ususes Bloodlust to increase his already dangerous physical attack. His next turn is a combination of Heart Punch and his normal drop spur attack. Try to take the time to heal your characters, Guard and prepare to resurrect the unlucky target. It is possible to prevent this attack, all you have to do is have a successful attack on him before he uses his combination attack and it should cancel it.

Another deadly combination occurs after Joe casts an Ether called Cerebration. This increases his Ether attack capabilities, and usually is followed up by a very strong Soul Crusher. Try to get your characters healed, and guard when you see Cerebration being used. If you get the chance you should use a Veil on your party, or if available use Light Wings to remove Joe's boost before he uses it.

When Joe's HP is around 4000, he decides to challenge Jr. specifically to a duel. Depending on how damaged your characters are and the status effects that remain on them, take this chance to attack with only Jr., and use the other characters to heal and renew any beneficial status effects. Any character can still choose to attack, but this makes Joe mad, and causes an instant counterattack.

By the time his HP is down to 2000, Joe decides he's had enough of the duel. He declares the duel has ended and casts an effect that has a 50% chance to reverse healing and damage on him. On your next turn, use either a Med Kit or small attack to see what effect he recieved. This isn't a permanent change, so just keep an eye out for damage and healing to revert it to normal. Basically ride out that spell and just hit him with ether attacks mainly, and keep healing your party.

You've defeated Joe!

When you defeat Joe, you recieve a Swimsuit and 200G, +Exp & Points. Also Jr. earnes the Soul Rhapsody Tech Attack and the Magnum Joe ether.
